\n This trip to Bern had been scheduled for a while, but I had done little to no homework to organise it. I knew I had to be at the Kunsthaus at 10:45. Aside from that, I counted on ...<\/a>providence and let the day unfold.
\n
\n After admiring the Parliament, drifting through an open-air market blooming with geraniums, I walked towards a bridge. I noticed a huge building on the opposite bank, but resisted the temptation to let Google Maps decipher the city. I wanted the place to emerge before being coined. Destiny comes without road signs, tags or labels. I started crossing, simply to get a better view of the Bellevue Palace, the Casino, and the city\u2019s skyline. At some point, it became ridiculous not to cross the river properly and see what was there.
\n
\n The Kunsthallebern revealed its sentry box silhouette.
\n
\n Serendipitously.
\n
\n Names carry history, and this building has long had a place in my memory as the iconic venue where Harald Szeemann orchestrated some of his most significant artistic deployments. In my personal pantheon of curators, he easily makes the top ten. Five even.
\n
\n Interestingly enough, the exhibition currently on view places humans as footnotes on the scale of the universe. The two show imagines a passage from the Anthropocene to the Dendrocene: from human domination to arboreal and natural centrality, from extraction and exploitation to rooted intelligence.
\n
\n The works of Guatemalan artist calel_edgar and German-Iraqi artist Lin May Saeed critically examine the hierarchies between human and non-human creatures.

\n So perhaps serendipity was not just my chosen method for encountering Bern. It was also the curatorial principle of the day: letting the city, the bridges, the ghosts, the river\u2019s flow, and a walk on shuffle mode decide where I should be looking next.

\n Museums \u2014 and artists \u2014 do that superbly: they sabotage the map just enough for fortuitous encounters to happen.

Um an den Inhalt zu gelangen, musste man das Schwanzende abbrechen. Die Glasv\u00f6gel auf dem Bild stammen aus r\u00f6mischen Gr\u00e4bern im ...<\/a>Kanton Tessin.
\n Dass auch in der r\u00f6mischen Schweiz solche und \u00e4hnliche d\u00fcnnwandige, farbige Gl\u00e4ser hergestellt wurden, zeigen Produktionsabf\u00e4lle beispielsweise aus Avenches VD.

The last room I saw of the collection display at the Mus\u00e9e des Beaux Arts in La Chaux-de-Fonds featured one of the most important, or certainly the most showy, part of the collection, which was almost entirely furnished by works from the Ren\u00e9 and Madeleine Junod collection. The local couple ...<\/a>managed to amass around 30 paintings between 1930 and 1950, almost all of which are by now very well-known artists. The collection was given into the museum in 1986, where it raised the profile of the museum\u2019s collection overall. What struck me as interesting is how seeing the works assembled together in a room is how they are all very similar in size, which reveals their origin from a private collection. It really is an ensemble of artworks that, although very varied in terms of subject and style, achieves uniformity in the format and it is easy to imagine them in a domestic setting, furnishing the walls of a salon or a study in a town-house.
