<p>The Ballenberg Open-Air Museum uses a concept where history is not passively explained, but brought to life through shared experiences and hands-on activities. The goal is to create spaces for genuine, intergenerational encounters.</p> <p>Experience history with all your senses: The educational approach is based on personal engagement and hands-on activities. Instead of just observing, visitors actively participate in threshing, straw braiding, coffee roasting, or baking Swabian doughnuts. This combines playful learning for children with the biographical memories of older generations.</p> <p>Shared experiences instead of individual consumption: Many offerings are specifically designed to strengthen the sense of togetherness. In workshops (such as communal baking over an open fire or cheese making), groups work hand in hand. Even in the everyday museum setting – for example, when jointly operating a historic hand-pumped fire engine – unforced, spontaneous conversations arise among strangers. Target group-specific formats: Specific tours engage different age groups. The fairy tale and legend tour «All Ears» makes cultural diversity audible through regional dialects. The children's tour «From Door to Door» transforms the museum visit into an interactive adventure for children and their companions through a frame story. Lived everyday life through enormous presence: A central pillar is the approximately 120 employees (craftsmen, farmers, educators), nearly 40 of whom work on-site daily in the houses and workshops. They demonstrate their skills not as a show, but as everyday life, and are always available for direct, personal exchange. Inclusion and feel-good factor: To ensure successful interaction, Ballenberg places great importance on an inviting and low-barrier environment.</p> <p>Linguistic and physical accessibility: The interpretation is consistently designed to be four-language (German, French, Italian, English). For people with limited mobility, there is the «Ballenberg à la carte» accessible circuit. Ergonomics and comfort: Ample seating, adapted viewing heights for children and wheelchair users, and easy-to-understand information ensure a relaxed and inclusive experience for all generations.</p>
