Experience Geneva step-by-step 🚶🚶♀️🚶♂️
A hidden lakeside villa… with a story spanning centuries.
Built around 1830, the Villa Bartholoni was designed by architect Félix-Emmanuel Callet for banker and railway entrepreneur Jean-François Bartholoni. The elegant ...summer residence was designed as both a retreat and a statement of prestige. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance and the work of Andrea Palladio, the villa showcases symmetry, classical sculptures, grand columns, and a breathtaking lakeside staircase.
Step inside, and the artistry continues—frescoed ceilings, trompe l’œil details, intricate friezes, and parquet floors crafted by more than 20 Italian artisans.
Vestiges of a Roman villa and baths were discovered just next to the villa in the 1920’s by Swiss archeologist Louis Blondel (1885 – 1967), proving that this site has been used for luxurious living and leisure since the Gallo-Roman era.
But the story doesn’t stop there…
Over time, the estate passed through generations before being acquired in 1924 by Hans Wilsdorf, founder of Rolex.
Just a few years later, the land was nearly lost forever. The League of Nations planned to build its headquarters here, and the villa faced demolition. But thanks to a historic agreement with the City of Geneva, the site was preserved.
Today, the villa lives on as the Museum of the History of Science, surrounded by one of Geneva’s most beautiful public parks, Parc de la Perle du Lac.

Today we discovered a small museum that might become my favourite find of 2026: the muenzkabinett in Winterthur.
It looks like a collection of coins.
In reality, it is a collection of stories explained by a museum director.
Let me retell one of them.
Coins first appeared in the... 7th century BC in Lydia (modern-day Turkey).
For a long time, they were a rather local phenomenon.
That changed in the 4th century BC.
Alexander the Great built an empire stretching from Greece to India. After conquering Persia, he gained access to vast amounts of gold and silver, and introduced a standardized coinage system across his empire.
The design was simple and consistent: Heracles with a lion skin on one side, Zeus on the other.
These coins were recognisable, trusted, accepted across borders.
They continued to circulate for centuries after his death and became probably the first ever liquid and standardized trusted "global currency".
We tend to think of “global currencies” as a modern invention. They are not.
The principles have not changed for more than 2,000 years.
Only the form (slightly) has.
On a recent visit to La Chaux-de-Fonds I finally managed to see the Musée International d’Horlogerie. The museum has a fantastic collection of objects retracing the history of objects used to keep time as well as tools and exhibits that recount the history of the watchmaking industry both ...locally and internationally. However, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of didactic storytelling used across the museum’s collection display. Presented mostly across two open plan areas, there are themed clusters of display cases across the room and a timeline along the wall. I found that with the themed sections, I kept accidentally walking into the neighbouring sections and the topics were rather vague. The texts, while not being very in depth still used a lot of watchmaking terminology that I found difficult to understand. I wish there had been a more guided path through the museum that could have explained the parts of the watches that I would later get to see, which would have given me a deeper appreciation for the craft of these incredible constructions. It seemed that there was some sort of restructuring going on with some small sections cordoned off and label texts for display cases missing. I hope this means that there are plans to restructure the collection because as it stands, I did not enjoy my visit.

Loved to see this again. Lately Joanna Yulia Kluge has referred to this remarkable artwork in her novel „David Pablo“. Wonder when it will perish.
